A carer has been awarded £1.5m compensation after developing fibromyalgia as a result of two separate workplace accidents.
On the first occasion, the 42-year-old woman was helping a patient get out of bed. The patient’s legs gave way and as she fell she dragged the carer with her.
The second accident happened three months later. The carer was helping a patient go to the toilet. Again the patient’s legs gave way and she fell. This time the carer suffered a severe twist in her back.
She developed fibromyalgia as a result of the accidents. The condition was permanent and she was unable to work again. She also required 24-hour care and assistance and had to live in adapted accommodation.
The carer brought action against her employers. She said they had been negligent in failing to provide proper training and equipment for such situations.
Her employers said that she had been partly responsible for the accidents but they agreed to an out-of-court settlement of £1.5m.
